Fudge and saltwater taffy are old-fashioned candies that offer sweet indulgence and are almost synonymous with a summer vacation or daytrip to historic Downtown Hayward WI. If you’ve got a sweet tooth or simply a longing for a treat, you’ll find plenty.

Walk into Lynn Marie’s Candies (10556 Main St) and you’ll be greeted with the incredible aroma of confections being prepared. A wall of wrapped taffy and hard candies, and tables chock-full of temptingly packaged candies offers visitors an astounding variety. Owners Kelly and Lynn Marie have welcomed kids of every age to this sweet shop for over three decades, and their hand-dipped chocolates, hard candies and nuts, taffy, fudge and other confections are often shipped nationwide to answer wish lists for gifts year-round.

The bright red Tremblay’s Sweet Shop (10569 Main St) houses a third-generation, family-owned destination where you’ll find candies they’ve handmade for over half a century. What started with a love of old tyme candies and a phrase The Sweetest Place This Side Of Heaven, today Tremblay’s creates world-famous turtles, hand-dipped chocolates, truffles, brittle and almond bark, and even sugar-free candies that are all crowd-pleasers. They offer gluten-free options and their special boxes are ready to fill with your favorites. If you want to share, order from home and ship a sweet taste of Hayward.

Right across the street, Tremblay’s Sweet City (10568 Main St) is a different variation of Tremblay’s and daughter, Chelsea, now manages this shop filled with an equally enticing treats menu. Here, you’ll find edible cookie dough, cupcakes in oodles of flavors and cake pops, macaroons, truffles, ice cream and novelty kids candies.

Hayward Gourmet (10456 Main St), owned by Jen and Ben, specializes in gourmet popcorn with flavors ranging from the Hayward Mix (cheese and caramel combo), to Puppy Chow, Kettle Corn and even Pickle Pop popcorn, you’ll find tantalizing choices. The Gourmet shop offers Hot Cocoa Bombs, hand-spun floss sugar cotton candy, handmade fudge, seasonal assorted mixed salt water taffy, caramels and toffee, and various hard candies. Visit their facility just off Main St (10603 California Ave) for the full selection plus fudge and salt water taffy.

We all scream for ice cream and you know it’s summer when downtown Hayward’s distinctive shops open. At Sundaes with Annabell & Charlotte (10555 Main St), you’ll find over 30 flavors of ice cream and lemon ice. You can also choose from shakes and malts, cones, dishes, gluten-free and sugar-free options, and new non-dairy oat-based flavors.

With the recognizable fiberglass cow attached to the building, West’s Hayward Dairy (15848 W Second St) has welcomed visitors since the ‘50s. Over 40 flavors of premium homemade ice cream is created on site for homemade waffle cones, cups, sundaes and ice cream drinks. Choose cool drinks and hot drinks, and if you have room, try an eye-popping sundae topped with whipped cream and a cherry. Find a favorite and take a hand-packed pint or gallon home to share.

And while Fireside Bakery & Deli (10565 Main St) offers more than sweets, you’ll be happy to find freshly-made donuts, cinnamon rolls, filled long johns plus cookies often colorfully-decorated for the season or a holiday, and delicious cakes for all occasions.

Inside Backroads Coffee (10526 Dakota Ave), you’ll find baked goodness from the on-site ovens of Vibes Bakery. Pies, cakes in every flavor, cookies, scones and biscotti all pair beautifully with the range of locally-roasted coffees, imported teas, and smoothies. You’ll find plenty to take home for later, too.
