It all began in 1973, when 35 determined skiers gathered on the starting line for the American Birkebeiner. Little did they know...they were about to change everything. Today, the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF) provides year-round, healthy, active lifestyle events for thousands of adventurous spirits of all ages and abilities. The ABSF hosts the Birkie, North America's largest cross-country ski race; the Fat Bike Birkie, the world's largest fat bike race; the Birkie Trail Run Festival and so much more. The Birkie offices and store is located in Downtown Hayward WI on Main St. East of Hwy 63.

American Birkebeiner Ski Races are held annually in February and are a week of celebratory fun races for all ages and abilities

The Angry Minnow located on Main Street is now OPEN! Enjoy this unique Brew Pub with their own Angry Minnow Brews. It is a special Art Gallery located in Downtown Hayward, WI is a creative studio and space that features FIVE Local Artists. The talented artists: Amy (watercolor artists), Deanna (abstract artist), Donna (painting & sculpture art), Nancy (lego art) and Valerie (abstract painting) invite you to check out the studio, their artwork and the Main Gallery Exhibit. Each month from May - October there are scheduled themed on-site Art Exhibits featuring other local artists that bring in pieces from the community (see our calendar of events).
